The personality of the Siberian Husky is usually very pleasant. As such, it is a dog you can spend long periods of time with. It is a decent combination.

Siberian Huskies can, however, be quite demanding when it comes to exercise. These are not the sorts of dogs to go for long without exercise.

Thus one should only take up a Siberian Husky if they will be able to exercise it regularly and adequately.

Great Dane

This is undoubtedly one of the most gigantic dogs you can get. It usually grows to a height above 28 inches, and sometimes as much as 32 inches.

Often, the Harlequin Great Dane will have eyes that are blue. This can be perceived as a partially black dog, thanks to the dark patches it has on its coat.

Solid black Great Danes exist. But they normally don’t have blue eyes…

Australian Shepherd

This is a medium to large size dog: usually attaining a height in the 18 to 23 inches range.

Some Australian Shepherds happen to have the Merle pattern. This is a mottled patches pattern, with huge dark color (almost black) patches on the body. On such Merle Australian Shepherds, the eyes will usually be blue.

The inference is that you can find a partially black Australian Shepherd that has blue eyes.

This will tend to be a usually calm but also energetic dog. Like all other shepherd dogs, you will find it in a nice combination of loyalty and independent-mindedness.

Border Collie

Here is another medium to large size dog – one that usually attains a height in the 18-22 inches range.

Now one of the colors in which Border Collies come is black. And there are rare cases in which you may find blue eyes on such black Border Collies.

Another color in which Border Collies come is Merle. That can be perceived as being partially black, due to the dark patches. And in the Merle Border collies, eye color will usually be blue.

The upshot is that you may find wholly or partially black Border Collies with blue eyes.

A Border Collie usually has lots of body hair, which can make it cuddly.

In terms of personality, it tends to be quite friendly, playful and energetic.

What you may find challenging in Border Collies is meeting the exercise and grooming requirements.

Alaskan Klee Kai

The Alaskan Klee Kai is one of those breeds in which the percentage of dogs with blue eyes is substantial.

It is possible to find wholly or partially black Alaskan Klee Kai dogs. Quite a number of these may have eyes that are blue.

One attractive thing about the Alaskan Klee Kai (to some people at least) is its relatively modest size. This means that meeting its accommodation and feeding needs is not so hard.

It helps too that the Alaskan Klee Kai is not too demanding with regard to exercise.

And in breeds like Alaskan Klee Kai (and the Siberian Husky we looked at earlier), the blue eyes are usually not viewed as a ‘defect’ in any sense. These are dogs with a special blue eyes gene. So blue eyes are not a merle gene manifestation.

What may be challenging is finding an Alaskan Klee Kai that is being offered for sale. This seems to be one of those rarer (some would say obscure) breeds.

But if you do find a black Alaskan Klee Kai that has blue eyes, it will be a pleasant dog.

Dachshund

One of the colors in which Dachshunds appear is black. And going through the black Dachshunds, you are bound to come across a few that have blue eyes.

So that is to say black Dachshunds with blue eyes exist.

It is remarkable that among the Dachshunds, it may be possible (with luck) to find near-solid black ones with blue eyes.

The near-solid black Dachshunds are those with the so-called dappled pattern.

Dachshund is one of the relatively small dogs that even people with limited spaces can manage.

In spite of being small, Dachshunds are capable of acting fierce. They can actually function well in roles that require dog fierceness, such as in guard roles.

With people they are conversant with, Dachshunds tend to be quite nice. So they still function well in family pets roles as well.

Are Black Dogs With Blue Eyes Healthy?

There are some people who believe that the presence of blue eyes on a dog is a defect. Then there are others who say that blue eyes on a dog can be normal in some cases.

For sure, some of the dogs with blue eyes turn out to be those with merle genes. Now if the dog only has one merle parent, it will usually have no major/special health problems.

But blue eyed dog health problems can be worrying in double merles. Such dogs may be prone to eye, ear and heart problems, among others.

It is still important to clarify that not all dogs with blue eyes have them due to merle genes. Some dogs with blue eyes have them due to another gene – the so-called ‘blue eyed’ gene.

That, for instance, is the one responsible for the almost ubiquitous blue eyes in breeds like Siberian Huskies.

Black dogs that have blue eyes due to the merle gene may have special health problems.

But black dogs that have blue eyes due to the so-called ‘blue eyed gene’ don’t usually have such health problems. If they have any health issues, they are similar to those for all other dogs.

Ultimately, to tell if a black dog that has blue eyes is healthy, you need to ask yourself two questions.

Firstly, you need to ask yourself what the genetic basis for the blue eyes is. Is it due to a merle gene? Or is it due to the usual ‘blue eyes gene’ present in breeds like Siberian Husky?

Secondly, if it is due to the merle gene, is the dog a single merle or a double merle? If it turns out to be a double merle, unique health problems may manifest.

Do Black Dogs With Blue Eyes Require Special Care?

For the most part, black dogs with blue eyes don’t require special care.

That is unless they happen to be having blue eyes on account of being double merles. In the latter case, the dog may be more prone to severe eye, ear and heart problems. So that would necessitate special care.

How To Acquire A Blue Eyed Black Dog?

Firstly, you need to make up your mind on which breed of black dogs with blue eyes you prefer.

Secondly, you need to approach a breeder who deals in that breed. Then enquire on whether they have a black dog that has blue eyes. You may need to check through the dogs yourself, to see if one meets your specs.

Thirdly, you need to have the dog examined, for any major health issues like deafness and blindness.

Finally, if the blue eyed black dog seems to be alright, you can close its purchase transaction.

Some of these black dogs with blue eyes may be abandoned at times. Thus there may also be the option of adopting one from a shelter.
