Now let’s say that the same 5 lb package of 90% lean contains only 75% lean. That meat would weigh in raw at about 4 1/2 lbs but once cooked would probably yield closer to 3 1/2 lbs of actual beef. This brings us to the next term:

Pounds (or %) Lean Cut

This is where it gets tricky because this term is not regulated by the USDA. Let’s use the example above; instead of 90% lean, that same 5 lb package might say “90% Lean/10% Fat” which would yield about a 4 1/2 lb cooked weight once again but with a different breakdown of fats and protein.

Unfortunately, this is where many dog foods will use this method to confuse the consumer into thinking they are getting more meat than they actually are. For example, that same 5 lb package of “90% Lean/10% Fat” could be made up of a stewing cut or ground round which has very little meat on it and is loaded with fat!  These types of cuts would yield only about 2 lb of meat once cooked.

So which option is best for your healthy bulldog? As with most things in life, the answer is….it depends! Those grocery store meats are far from perfect and you’ll find that we do recommend them frequently on this blog when we talk about “treats”.

At the same time, those cuts are not as expensive as a higher quality cut. If you can afford it and the grocery store is your only option then that’s what I would purchase.

The Pros of Supermarket Meat

Meat is convenient and easy to make which makes it a popular choice with many bulldog owners because you can quickly make a meal for your dog.

Plus, it’s cheap! If you buy large quantities of meat then the cost per pound is pretty reasonable.

The Cons of Supermarket Meat

Meat from the grocery store is not necessarily good for your English bulldog’s health. The nutrients that are found in supermarket meats will generally be lower than that of better cuts and the ratio of protein to fat will also be lower.

Another issue is BHT, a preservative which has been linked to cancer in dogs. The FDA states that there is no safe level of consumption for this chemical but it’s allowed in our food!

Most supermarket meats are processed at high temperatures which reduces the nutritional value and alters the structure of the meat itself.

The quality and safety of supermarket meats will vary widely from store to store, even within one chain. This is because there are no standards in place for these companies to follow.

If you want better quality meat, then you should look at “Organic” or “Natural” cuts.

These terms are not regulated but after doing lots of research and speaking with veterinarians and nutritionists it appears that the meats labeled as “organic” or “natural” will be more nutritious for your dog than supermarket meat.
